What man had a tree named for him and died while exploring the Washington wilderness?

There is no "Washington Wilderness," so maybe you mean the Mount Washington Wilderness? The Douglas Fir, which is common there, was named after biologist and explorer David Douglas. (Douglas Fir is not its official botanical name, but its common name.) I am not sure he died there, but he well may have.
