For a real treat, and I mean it...a real treat for anyone involved in outdoor living and guiding. there is a book.

Not just a book. A lifetime of wisdom from the world's finest navigator, in his day.

Nature Is Your Guide by Harold Gatty.

It's out of print but findable.

It is a joy to read, a goldmine of information, and the finest book I have ever bought.

I have over two thousand books at home.

Here is the story of Harold Gatty, the man who navigated for Wiley Post on his circumnavigation of the world by air.

He trained on ships, was head-hunted by the US Air Force, wrote the official navigation manual for them, and is still highly respected many years after his death, though many people have never heard of him. Shame. He was a pioneer in navigation, and a very capable one.

From north country cottage orientation in England to Pacific navigation by cloud colour and the shapes of waves, finding your way in town or on the Tundra, by day or night, Nature Is Your Guide or any of his navigation books is a joy to read and a blessing to have.

What a nice gesture on your part, you are a good friend! Even though etiquette frowns on gift cards, get one for your friend in this case. For almost every outdoor enthusiast I know, their gear is a very personal thing, and they really like to get their own stuff. There are so many variables in gear items, and reasons why one thing will be better for them than another. What one person considers indispensable someone else will see as superfluous. Store workers don't help because they want you to buy what they need to sell, or they will tell you what they really want for themselves. Items on "gift idea" lists tend to be gadgety and the novelty of having them wears off. So you will most likely be wrong no matter what you pick. It is not your fault, and it doesn't mean your friend is hard to buy for, it is just the nature of the beast!!

On the other hand we always have a little wish list going of stuff we are eyeballing, and stuff we are saving for. So the money will go a long way. I recommend a gift card to Campmor.com because they have a huge assortment of excellent gear for every budget. Their prices are good and anyone with internet can access their store.Need to find a gift for a friend beginning a job as a wilderness guide any ideas?
This may be a little out of your price range, but maybe you could buy him a handheld GPS. that way he would never get lost! if he has that or you do not want to shell out that much money, you can always go back to the basics and buy him stuff he would need on the job. socks, hats, sunnglasses all may sound simple but definitely helps.
A good steel thermos bottle, couple pairs wool socks, bug dope, steel whistle to keep bears away, a backpack type 1 liter water bottle, emergency signal mirror, compass and map of area he will be working at sounds practical.
Get him a mod 629 44 mag with a 4 inch barrel and one bullet and the front sight shaved off.......

he'll know what to do with it !
