What does the last encounter in the wilderness of Jesus with Satan mean?

What does it symbolize? What does it mean actually? What does the last encounter in the wilderness of Jesus with Satan mean?
Pretty good answers by everyone so far but no one has hit the "Jackpot"!

Yes all what they say about temptation and beating the devil is right. But that is not what Jesus only teaches us.

Most people don't want to see this or ignore this but God knows they do.

What did Jesus go to do in the wilderness?

He went to fast! Why? Because when you can avoid temptation when you are weak, then when you are strong it will be a "piece of cake".

Jesus shows us that fasting and training your body you can come to control your temptations. Fasting is one of the most powerful weapons of a Christian. The only food is prayers to God. The relationship you build with Him is close to perfect at that time because He is your only contact when you pray.

Of course few people today see fasting as necessary but Jesus does.

Greek Orthodoxy is mocked because of the fasting cycle we have in our calendar. But this has made me strong day after day.

Prophets in the Old Testament and Saints have fasted not only a few days but 40 as Jesus. And when we say that Greek Orthodoxy fasts in very strict ways leaving more than half of the year meat free people think I am ridiculous. And that there are days that we don't eat even oil of any kind. When I say meat I mean all meat(Chicken, beef, fish, and anything that has blood in it). That would be very bad for Fast Food stores that rely on meat products only.

But who is going to listen to me? Who is going to listen to Jesus?

God Bless
It means that Jesus's divine nature didn't keep Him from experiencing the same temptation we experience.

He had the same doubts that any human being has, and He was tempted to test God's love the same way we are. But He didn't because He knew that no proof could ever match God's love for us.What does the last encounter in the wilderness of Jesus with Satan mean?
He was put under severe temptation in order to prove he was fully man yet fully God at the same time.
It means that the world was in satan's hands and he was offering to Jesus , without dying the horrible death that awaited Him, If he just bowed down and worshiped Satan.
It shows us, as the bible teaches, that we do not have a high priest who has not been tempted (like we are tempted), that He indeed faced temptation...but was without sin.

This also shows us, as Christians, that the word of God is what we need to use against the enemy.

It also is an example of God's word being taken out of context. Satan said to Jesus, if you are the son of God, throw yourself down from this mountain, because His word says His angels have charge over you, that you will not even dash your foot against a stone.

Jesus answered, "you will not put the Lord your God to the test", but satan also left out an important part of the verse he quoted. The rest of it is that God will "keep you in all of your ways". That means, we are not to go around flinging ourselves under cars to see if God will save us or not.
it was to show the humanity of Jesus and to show that we too can resist temptation, through the word of God.
It means that if Jesus can handle it than so can you.

It also means that God is all fair and that He would not have you go through temptation if He (Jesus Christ) had not gone through it.
It defined the nature of Jesus' mission. It was not to be just about solving practical problems (bread), showing off (jumping) or taking control (kingdoms). It was to be about reconciling people to God.
I think that one of the lessons here is to notice that the devil used scripture to try and deceive. And trust me there are those who do this to this day.Christ first warning when asked what the last days would be like in Mark 13 was "Don't let man deceive." Also Amos 8:11 the famine in the in days is not for bread but for hearing the real word of God.The only way to know the real truth is to get into the bible chapter by chapter verse by verse http://www.shepherdschapel.com/index.cfm
It definitely showed who had the greatest authority. Three times Jesus said, "It Is Written," and 3 times Satan backed off. The Word of God is more powerful than the reigning authority, than gaining the whole world, than food, than popularity, than pleasure and definitely power.

1. Man can't live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.

2. Peer pressure or popularity is wrong - thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

3. Put no other gods before God - worship God and worship only God.

Bow down to nothing else. Serve only God for man shall not have 2 masters. Powers answer - you can have all of this if you will just do this. Choose man instead of God or better yet choose me said Satan.

Jesus knew He would soon crush the Devil's head so with great authority He told Satan to get away from Him.
