Is it Illegal to camp in the wilderness in New York state? or any of the States inbetween Boston and DC?

and I'm talking about PROPPER camping not paying or any of that just setting of and setting up in the middle of the wilderness? and if so what are the concequences? Thanks. Is it Illegal to camp in the wilderness in New York state? or any of the States inbetween Boston and DC?
There are lots of areas in NY where you can camp for free, especially in the Adirondack park. They even have free lean-tos with a cooking circle. Aside from the Adirondacks there are state forests that allow camping. In general it is frowned upon for you to make campfires except in extablished areas since there is always a risk of starting a fire. You have to check with each state park system for fees, but in NY there is plenty of free camping. State parks will normally charge, but forests will not.
yes there are allot of places to camp in NY state and outside of Boston, but i live very close to DC and to the best of myknowledgee there are no places to camp in DC but there are many places to camp in Maryland and Virgina. if you were to attempt to camp illegally the worst that will happen in a fine and if it is in DC i am sure you will have to answer allot of questions of why your trying to camp there. Some places in DC i would not want to camp anyway south east and north west DC are not the safest places to be any way let alone to camp.Is it Illegal to camp in the wilderness in New York state? or any of the States inbetween Boston and DC?
In New York State much of the "wilderness" is private property, so if you have permission from the property owners there should be no problem. On state land camping is permitted, with certain regulations. Here is a link to the NY Dept. of Environmental Conservation with more specific info. http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/7872.html
No I don't think so, unless you are on someone else's property. You might want to call the fish and game commission and make sure the area you are going isn't a wildlife reserve or something similar. I grew up in PA in Erie and you aren't allowed to camp down on the peninsula, so i'm sure there are many other places that belong to the government that you can't camp, but there's a lot land from Boston to DC so you're bound to find a place that is non charging and isn't a juvenile camping area....

i'd call the fish and game commission or the department of environmental conservation.
As long as you are not on private property (in which case you could be subject to being a trespasser) and not in a restricted area (like near Camp David) there most likely would be of little consequence.

However, there is very little area left in the northeast that is not private property. Even mountains and forest are privately owned.
