Where is there real wilderness camping outside of New York City?

We'll be renting a car so it doesn't have to be accessible to public transportation. We're looking for a real wilderness type of camping experience, rather than putting up a tent on a large lawn or within view of other campers. Any suggestions would be appreciated.Where is there real wilderness camping outside of New York City?
Well Sophie lots of folks head to the local national forests west. north and south of you. They have many campgrounds from which to chose from and also dispersed camping areas that you can drive to and or hike into and camp. If you don't have a lot of experience camping I do recommend you stick to the established campgrounds as you can always get advice from nearby campers when you need it. Here a some links to the local forests near you and some advice articles

There are plenty of options in upstate NY, PA, and New England. Check out the Adirondacks and the Finger Lakes region.Where is there real wilderness camping outside of New York City?
What you deem wilderness camping is not true wilderness camping, you`re looking for a primative campsite. Look into Harriman State Park and anywhere in the Adirondack wilderness areas. The Adirondacks are bigger than the Grand canyon, yellowstone and yosemite combined.
I would say ALL real wilderness camping is outside of NYC.
