well i like your idea but i think if you went with something more ornamental it would probably have more sentimental value to him then just a normal compass . i think anyone would like something like this. oh and this would be a functional compass for him to use on his trip also

A Lensatic Compass would be a good choice for durability and ruggedness, but there's a plethora of other 'recreational' compasses available with more features.
