I look to the sun. It rises in the east and sets in the west. Use your body as a compass visualizing a map of the USA: North is up, south is down, the westcoast (California) is left and the east (Florida) is right. So if you are facing north the westcoast will be on your left and east on your right with south behind you. Facing east then west will be behind you and north to your left and south to your right, etc...

It's called the sun. Out here we have barrel cactus which grow south. You can also use cork, a needle and some stable water. You can rub a magnet or a piece of silk towards the point, stick it through the cork and place it on stable water and see where it points. How to tell direction in the wilderness (other then moss) without a compass?
Plants grow towards the sun so you can get a good idea even at night. Follow the sun. At night the moon and stars seem to turn and they turn east to west. Streams and rivers flow out to sea.
This video demonstrates how to make a sun compass with a couple of sticks.
