What exactly is the wilderness on Runescape?

The wilderness used to be a place where Player killing happened. But Jagex took out Pking and replaced the Pkers with Revenants. Now there's Pvp worlds. The wilderness is mostly black, with lots of dead trees.

unfortuanately, they took out PVP and replaced the wilderness for PVP worlds. All that is there for now is a few places to train, a castle or two, and occasionally an imp.
wilderness is north of the ditch that is north of edgeville and varrock, horizontally and spanning further past both. Mostly not much to do there other than killing green dragons, revenants, couple rune rocks, agility training area, clue scrolls.
The wilderness is the most risky place. In there, there are many users in Level 1-5 place killing each other. There are some users who went deeper in Wilderness to risk themselves to kill another user.
Players kill other players so, yes it was the wilderness... noob
In PvP worlds it is a place to kill and get rich by killing it is loaded with all kinds of monsters the deeper you go, also mini games and dungeons can be found. In non pvp worlds you cannot kill players.
Its an area with a lot of high leveled monsters called renevants that attack you with magic attacks that can hit up to 50.

That used to be what could happen in the wilderness but now they changed it and you can not attack other players.
Mostly you can go there to go to minigames, in PvP worlds you can kill other players and if you're a member, you can go to he deep end of the wildy and kill certain monsters not available to F2P players.
The wilderness use to be a great place where players can fight each other to the death and claim the other players items.



However Jagex took the wilderness out because many higher level players were taking low level players deep into the wilderness to kill them. They would lure them by trading or by saying "I know where to get alot of good items, just follow." After a while Jagex put in a wilderness ditch to try to prevent this, however many players created bot accounts, so they took those bot accounts to the wild and killed them for the items just to get rich.



Now the wilderness is no longer a player vs player area. Instead the wilderness is composed of reveants (who will attack, and freeze you), dragons, hellhounds, chaos element (big ugly blob deep in the wilderness), bandits, black unicorns, hill giants and skeletons.



Also the fist of guthix, clan wars, and stealing creation are located in the wilderness.



Where that player took you and killed you was the wilderness.





now instead of players fighting in the wilderness, Jagex created PVP worlds, where only certain areas are safe, the other areas players can fight and kill each other.
