What do you think the most important wilderness survival survival skill is and why?

Pick something else besides the will to survive.

After the will to survive I think fire making is the most imortant, why? well:

Fire can keep you warm

Fire can be used to purify water and cook food

Fire can boost morale

Fire can be used to signal rescuers

Fire can be used to scare away dangerous animalsWhat do you think the most important wilderness survival survival skill is and why?
Shelter.

You can have fire all you want, but exposure can kill you quickly, and fire cannot withstand heavy rain, snow, or wind.
Had to change this because I misread your question. Firemaking is definitely a top survival skill. So are the ability to locate water and the ability to make simple tools, such as a spear, but knowing how to start a fire is hard to beat.

JMBWhat do you think the most important wilderness survival survival skill is and why?
Keeping your head and your wits about you. And keeping hydrated, warm, and DRY!
seems you answered your own question.

I think its the ability to make or find water. Guess it depends on the situation. It you are lost in the woods, perhaps fire would be more important to keep you warm , and predators away.

If you are in a liferaft out in the ocean, fire isn't going to help you much.
Fire is a good one but so is hunting. If you can build a fire and not hunt you are warm and hungry.
