Wilderness camping Is it necessary to cut a fish head off before you cook it?

I know it necessary to gut it, to get out the organs and wash it in a stream or other running water to clean out it insides and anything poisonous in it stomach. Also can you just stick a stick in it and cook it over a camp fire?(after you clean and gut it of course.)Wilderness camping Is it necessary to cut a fish head off before you cook it?
You do not even need to gut it NOR cook it; if it's from a decent water source. It's nice to remove the intestines, to get trid of the bitterness though.

ANSWER:

Nah.

TECHNIQUE:

Just slit the throat up at the gill area, pull out the nastiness inside, and kind of bend the head section back to shove a stick in the body cavity. You'd want to split open the stomach though, it will cook more even /faster if it is a large fish.

Trout, cats, other "skinned" fish can be eaten whole. "Scaled" fish might require some scaling if they are large and you plan on eating the skin.

To cook, use the stick like you suggested, or wrap in large, wet, fresh leaves. It will kind of "bake" the fish, you can then just remove the skin by peeling. Add in some wet wild plants, and you can have a nice steamed meal without a cookset.Wilderness camping Is it necessary to cut a fish head off before you cook it?
Birds do it.

Look at a You Tube video on fillet action. You choose how to eat a fish, but a good fillet knife helps.
