What is the name of the man who left civilization and took his family to live with him in the wilderness?

I believe that he was a doctor, or lawyer, or businessman... He got fed up with materialism and decided to go live in the wilderness. He took his wife and their two small kids with him. I believe that a news channel did a story on him back in the '80s when he first moved, and then revisited him and his family recently (now that the kids have grown up). Does anyone know this man's name? Thanks! What is the name of the man who left civilization and took his family to live with him in the wilderness?
Are you talking about the Jarvis family? There was a good piece on them on National Public Radio's program "This American Life."

Ronald and Eileen Jarvis and their six kids lived in a treehouse, and in a boat...they grew up without TV and were homeschooled. They taught themselves carpentry and how to play instruments. Never went to the doctor or set foot in a school.

Mr. Jarvis didn't live this way because he was "fed up" with modern life, though...he was having serious legal trouble because he was caught growing marijuana. There's a link to an article about the family and their history below.
