My friends and I are considering going backpacking in the Emigrant Wilderness to a trail called Bear Lake in California. The Stanislaus National Forest website states that I need a Wilderness Visitor's Permit for overnight visits. How do I get that? Also, will I need something else like a reservation or any other kind of permit? Thanks! How and where do I get a "Wilderness Visitor's Permit"?
You will be going through Sonora on highway 108 and in Mi-wuk, east of Sonora, is a Forest Service station. Stop there, they will issue a wilderness permit, for free during normal business hours. I believe Bear Lake is restricted to only one nights camping, I may be wrong on that. If you wish to have a campfire you will also need a campfire permit, also free.
I backpack the Emigrant on a regular basis.
U.S. F.S. You might want to check with the forest service if a fire permit is required also. How and where do I get a "Wilderness Visitor's Permit"?
That's one of my favorite spots! Anyway, call the ranger station, Emigrant has quotas and you have to make a reservation pretty far in advance, a month or two at least, depending on season. You can have them mail it or you can pick it up on your way in. Also, open fires are illegal, I think the fine was about 300 bucks. They give you a "fire permit" but its really only stoves that are legal. And bring plenty of deet, mosquitos are thick out there.
