Can a person just walk into the wilderness, and make it their home in the US?

Like a mountain man I guess. Can you just go into the wilderness and live off the land. Is that legal? Can it be done? Can a person just walk into the wilderness, and make it their home in the US?
Yes you can. It is legal in most states as long as it is public land and not a national park like Yellowstone or Yosemite.

Living off the land might be difficult as you must buy a hunting license in whatever state you are in. And they will need to see a photo ID and proof of residence. If you get caught hunting without a license it is both a state and federal offense and you will wind up in prison. If you can't hunt then calories will be scarce. Unless you can eat tree bark.

Try Alaska. After you live there for the required time period you become a state citizen and are eligible to homestead. I saw a documentary on TV and a man homesteaded in Alaska and his bag limit on caribou was 5. Per day. Easy to get fat if you like caribou. Can a person just walk into the wilderness, and make it their home in the US?
unless there is a law that prohibits squatting of public land, one can assume that to squat on privately owned land is trespassing already.
