Why do so many people run away to alaska and try to live in the wilderness?

I mean why not live in the wilderness a few hundred miles south of there? Where it's actually feasible (If you can find a big enough tract of land)? I watched Into The Wild and it's like they're romanticising his idiocy. He died! Whats to great about that?
