I am making a permanent campsite in the middle of Indiana wilderness. Am making all several structures out of wood i have cut myself, but i am using cotton thread to tie everything together, little did i know it is biodegradable. So how long will it last? How long will it take for cotton to degrade in the wilderness?
Since the thread itself is structural, it will deteriorate much more quickly. If I took a pair of Levi's and just threw them on the forest floor, I'd expect to see SOME remnant after 10 years. That remnant wouldn't be usable as jeans, but it wouldn't be gone either. Your cotton line is being put under load. That changes things drastically. The line itself will probably be there for quite some time, but it will have quit doing its job loooong ago. Why does this matter, if you don't mind my asking? You are going to have to be doing maintenance on this site at least once a year anyway. Just take some extra damn string with you.
depending on moisture, cold, insects, mabey 2 years, weatherproof the cotton tread with wax or tar it will last a very very long time decades. How long will it take for cotton to degrade in the wilderness?
I would give it 3 years. Too many variables. Weather, moisture, animals, vandals and acts of God
50-75 years
