I'm looking for a dog that I can run with and taking on my wilderness adventures. Any ideas?

I like running, camping, hiking, pretty much anything that has to do with the outdoors. Need a protective companion.I'm looking for a dog that I can run with and taking on my wilderness adventures. Any ideas?
Just about any healthy dog would fit the bill, excluding some of the brachycephalic (short-nosed) breeds and some of the cold-weather breeds with thick fur that need their activity limited in hot weather particularly. I own two small dogs (a miniature pinscher and a boston terrier) who both participate in all the activities you mention (though the boston does not go on long hikes when it is hot out). They even go rafting and boating with me (with life vests).

There are a lot of other factors to consider. What size dog do you want? What is your experience level with dogs? How much grooming are you willing to do/have done? How much shedding are you willing to tolerate? How much time are you willing to invest in training? How much exercise can you provide on an everyday basis (not just on the weekends)? Do you have or are you planning soon to have children? What personality traits do you enjoy? And so on. Decide on the specific traits you want, and then go looking for a dog that most closely meets your expectations.

Add: Labs and Goldens aren't right for everyone. While I am active and spend a lot of time outdoors, I'd never consider owning either breed. I don't want to deal with the shedding that comes with either, and dislike the general dependent temperament of both breeds as well. No one can recommend a good breed for you based solely on activities that you like to do, as that's only one factor in choosing a dog. Research any breed you are considering thoroughly before deciding on one.
a jack russell terrier can run for miles, loves camping, loves hiking, swimming, and a tough dog in a small package ... i even had a friend take my dog rock climbing in a pouch and once at the top they hiked down ... they are smart athletic dogs that require a firm owner but with the right owners they can be the perfect dog ... they require more exercise than a lab does ... minimal grooming and way cheaper to vet and feed than a big dog, and small dogs are easier to transport (fits in a bike basket, only for after she has run 6 miles will she ride in the basket) and welcome in more places than larger dogs ...I'm looking for a dog that I can run with and taking on my wilderness adventures. Any ideas?
A golden retriever or a labrador retriever would be PERFECT for you! They are EXACTLY what you seek (see links, below).

Good luck!... :-D
Wiemaraners are great dogs for the out doors. Go to an animal rescue for the breed and get a 2-3 year old. Pups are far too spastic.
LABRADOR'S ARE AMAZING!
a lab or a golden retriever are good, try not to pick a giant breed like a st bernard or a newfie!
get a husky
i think a lab is the way one go..they're outdoor dogs
