I need to know if i need a fire permit, what type of clothes to wear, what the bugs are like at this time of year, how much money i should bring, and what trails are the best. Im looking for a 2 day trip so i need a trail about 10 miles long and im planning to go October 25 so do i need more time to plan or is that enough?I have some questions for anyone who has hiked on the Sipsey Wilderness trails?
I haven't been myself but I found this website with trail maps, guides, suggestions, and trip reports: http://www.alabamatrail.org/hikingAL/Sip鈥?/a> And this one: http://www.sipseywilderness.org/triprepi鈥?/a>
And more information than you could read by Oct 25th here: http://members.aol.com/sipseywilderness/鈥?/a>
The second and third of the recommended trail loops on this page meet your two day criteria: http://www.alabamatrail.org/hikingAL/Sip鈥?/a>
GORP has a couple suggestions as well: http://gorp.away.com/gorp/resource/us_na鈥?/a>
To answer your question a wilderness permit is required anywhere in the Bankhead NF including the Sipsey Wilderness, and that permit, obtained from the ranger station, will be the equivalent of a campfire permit: http://www.fs.fed.us/r8/alabama/forests/鈥?/a>
I've planned 2 day backpacking trips in a week, so unless you need to mail order some new gear, you could probably take care of shopping for food, preparation and packing in a day. There's also a $3 parking fee at the trailhead.
