Who should we talk to about something like this and whats the best way to get started?I want to move out into the wilderness far away from other people and possibly start a wildlife preserve.?
Your ambition is admirable! To prepare yourself for such a project, you'll need to become self-reliant -- able to take care of your own needs for food and shelter, energy, health care, entertainment, and all the other services that other people generally provide. If I were you, I would study the indigenous plants in whatever area you plan to live, and learn which ones are edible and which have medicinal properties. I would develop skills in construction and mechanics, heating and cooling, and innovative energy resources (like photovoltaic panels, passive solar building design, etc.). I would learn about nutrition and health maintenance and first aid; organic gardening and food preservation. It might be useful to have a good communications system, so it might be worthwhile to study amateur radio and get a "ham" license. Finally, once you've grown confident that your own survival and primary needs will be covered, you can get serious about studying wildlife management -- learning about habitats for various species, maintaining ecological balance, etc.
For preliminary information, you might consult the federal government's Fish and Wildlife Service (I think it's under the Department of the Interior), and your state (or whatever place you're planning to go to) may have such an agency too. Also, you might contact the Nature Conservancy -- I've heard that they have caretakers on some of their remote properties.
Best wishes! I hope you'll be successful in creating a meaningful life in the wilderness!
You shouldn't since by moving to the wilderness far from other people you will bring man to this wilderness and disrupt the natural cycle of life. Most true environmentalists would rather just rope off large tracks of land and have them inaccessible to man.I want to move out into the wilderness far away from other people and possibly start a wildlife preserve.?
the moving out part is easy, just do it. the preserve part you may need some sort of education on wildlife stuff.
if you want to start a wildlife preserve, you will need money. How do you plan on getting money?
